10 FUN FACTS ABOUT KRAFT, BRADY, BELICHICK AND THE NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS

1-They weren’t always the New England Patriots. The Patriots were originally the Boston Patriots, but changed the name to the New England Patriots when they moved to Foxborough in 1971. The Patriots will make their league-leading 11th Super Bowl appearance when they take on the Rams in Super Bowl LIII.

2- In a crafty (pun intended) business decision, Robert Kraft swooped in and prevented the Patriots franchise from relocation — St. Louis was where James Busch Orthwein intended to move the team after the Cardinals had left years earlier. In 1992, Robert Kraft owned Foxboro Stadium, then home of the New England Patriots and rejected a $75

million offer to buy out the lease which would have allowed the team to move. Instead, Kraft paid a then-NFL record $175 million to buy the team and keep it in the Boston area.

3-Tom Brady holds the record for the most Super Bowl appearances by any player with eight. Brady is 5-3 in Super Bowls.

4-Brady was the 199th pick in the 2000 NFL Draft. Tom Brady didn’t get picked up until nearly the end of the sixth round of the 2000 draft, but he’s shown every NFL team that passed on him what they missed out on. Is he the G.O.A.T.? Many would say yes. After all, he’s won more Super Bowls than any other QB (five), he’s a three-time NFL MVP, a four-time Super Bowl MVP, a nine-time AFC Champion, has over 70,000 passing yards, over 500 touchdown passes, and … the list truly goes on and on.

5-Bill Belichick has the most Super Bowl appearances by a coach with eight. He’ll coach in his ninth as the Patriots take on the Rams on Sunday, Feb. 3, 2019.

6-The New England Patriots’ Tom Brady has currently won five Super Bowls, more than any other starting quarterback. Terry Bradshaw and Joe Montana won four apiece.

7- Tom Brady has the record for most Super Bowl MVP awards with four.

8-The Patriots have won only five championships. They’re tied for second place with the 49ers and the Cowboys after appearing in 11 championship games: 1986, 1997, 2002, 2004, 2005, 2008, 2012, 2015, 2017, and 2018. This year they could move up into first with a win against Jeff Goff and the Rams.

9- The Steelers currently have the most Super Bowl wins (six) and Patriots are hoping to tie that number with a win. (They’re currently tied with the 49ers and the Cowboys at five.) They are currently tied for the most playoff wins (36 apiece), so if the Pats do win, they’ll take the lead in that competition.

10-The dynasty is coming full circle. The Patriots first Super Bowl win — the one that ignited the dynasty — was against the St. Louis Rams in 2002. They defeated them 20-17 thanks to a 48-field goal kick by Adam Vinatieri as the clock expired. It was the first Super Bowl after the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2011, and George H.W. Bush conducted the coin toss, the first president to ever do so in person. If not for a Drew Bledsoe injury earlier in the season, Tom Brady wouldn’t have even played that season, but once Belichik saw what he could do on the field, he kept starting him, even after Bledsoe was healthy. At the time, his call to stick with Brady was controversial.
